Marijuana or medical marijuana is not a cure for Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); however, it is beneficial in relieving symptoms associated with IBS. The endocannabinoid system or (ECS) is a network of receptors located on the surface of cells throughout the body. Yes we have cells inside our bodies ready to accept cannabis and receive its advantageous properties.
We have our own system of internal cannabinoid neurotransmitters, or (messengers) that help regulate our body’s function, functions like mood, memory, appetite, pain and anxiety respond to cannabis when taken. When cannabis or marijuana is ingested and broken down in the body, one of the chemical components Cannabidiol or (CBD) the main drug that helps decrease inflammation attaches to the Endocannabinoid receptor and sends a signal to a sensory nerve to respond by reducing stress like symptoms which many people with IBS may suffer. Clearly, more research remains to be done. However many patients with IBS appear to be getting benefit from the controlled application of cannabis.
